Season Essentials: Our Approach to Seasonal Parenting

Parenting moves in seasons. Each one brings a shift — new routines, new activities, new toys, new clothes, and new challenges. For us, seasons represent change and an opportunity to start fresh. As our kids grow, their needs change too, and we adjust right along with them. Sometimes that means buying new clothes because of a growth spurt, switching out toys for outdoor play, or preparing for weather that demands a different kind of gear.

Season Essentials was built because we kept running into the same problem: seasonal decision fatigue. Our youngest has sensitive skin, so even simple choices like wipes or sunscreen required research. Outdoor adventures needed reliable gear. Winter meant finding safe, warm essentials. Summer meant travel, sun protection, and keeping routines intact. And every season brought new questions from friends asking what worked for us — and us asking them the same.

The moment we realized parents needed a seasonal resource was during our first trip from California to Rhode Island. Packing for different climates, managing baby gear, and figuring out what was actually worth bringing made it clear: parents need one place to filter out the noise and find practical, trustworthy essentials.

We’ve also had our share of frustration. Researching seasonal gear often meant returning items that didn’t meet our standards. We learned quickly that quality matters, practicality matters, and not everything marketed to parents is worth the purchase. If a product didn’t serve our family well, it doesn’t make it onto this site. Only top products earn a place here — if it’s not listed, we either didn’t find it useful or it didn’t meet our criteria.

Our seasonal routines reflect the rhythm of our home. Fall is our favorite — cool weather, changing leaves, outdoor fun, and college football. When our oldest was little, my uncle told me, “When all else fails, sit him in your lap and watch football.” It worked… until he turned two. 

Spring brings fresh air, singing birds, and a reset for the home. We put on music, clean together, and watch our youngest dance, laugh, and help with toy vacuums and brooms. These moments shape how we choose seasonal gear: it must support learning, safe outdoor play, comfort, and joy.
